History of Coronaviruses
Why coronavirsus got this name?
Ø It has crown shaped structure on the viruses
structure. Covid-19 denotes that COrona VIrus Disease
and the number 19 describes that the year the virus spreaded, founded and
tested.
year and other unknown facts about the virus
Ø It was spreaded and known from the Wuhan city placed
in china (Asia) in December 1 in the year of 2019 (1.12.2019)
Ø Since 2003, 5 new human corona
viruses have been discovered. Three of these are group I viruses that are
closely related and likely represent the same viral species. In 2004, van der
Hoek et al32 reported the
discovery of a new human corona virus, NL63, isolated from a
7-month-old girl with coryza, conjunctivitis, fever and bronchiolitis. Using a
novel genomic amplification technique, these investigators were able to
sequence the entire viral genome. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that this
virus was a group I corona virus related
to 229E and transmissible gastroenteritis virus, a virus of pigs. Screening of
614 respiratory specimens collected between December 2002 and April 2003 turned
up 7 additional individuals who tested positive for NL63. All had upper or
lower respiratory tract disease or both.
Ø In
humans, corona viruses cause respiratory tract infections that can be mild, such as some cases of the common cold (among other
possible causes, predominantly rhinoviruses), and others that
can be lethal, such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Symptoms in other species vary: in chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea.
Ø There
are yet to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or
treat human corona virus infections Corona viruses constitute
the subfamily Orthocoronavirinae, in the family Coronaviridae, order Nidovirales, and realm Riboviria. They are enveloped viruses with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome and a nucleocapsid of helical
symmetry.
Ø The genome size of corona
viruses ranges from approximately 27 to 34 kilo bases, the largest among known RNA viruses.
Ø The name corona virus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning
"crown" or "halo", which refers to the characteristic
appearance reminiscent of a crown or a solar corona around the
virions (virus particles) when viewed under two dimensional transmission electron
microscopy, due to the surface being covered in club-shaped protein
spikes.
